Gateway is a nationwide program funded by the New Zealand government that allows young people to have real-life work experience while still at school. Students generally have one day a week on a work placement over a period of 10 weeks. Alongside the work placement, students work towards 20 NCEA credits that are related to the industry that their work experience is in. For more information, see the TEC website.
The gateway program allows students to experience potential career options and builds links within the industry. The gateway program provides an experience that can be listed on your CV for future employers, and gateway placements often lead directly to employment with the gateway company. At TBC, over 40 students who did a Gateway placement in 2022 are now employed by their Gateway employer.
Gateway is available to students in Years 11, 12, and 13. However, in most cases, students must be 16 to undertake a Gateway course, and priority is given to students in Years 12 and 13.
